Recurring vs. Bounty: Pricing Your Affiliate Program

Not financial advice. Verify claims independently.

The math behind payout structures — and why fintech affiliates demand recurring.

Advertisers ask: should we pay a bounty or a residual? Publishers already know the answer — it depends on churn and intent — but the math deserves a clean ledger entry.

The bounty case

A $150–$250 bounty works when:

  • Sales cycles are short
  • Product is low-touch / self-serve
  • You need a spike of partners, not a decade of them

Bounties are easy to budget. They are also easy for affiliates to abandon the week a higher bounty appears elsewhere.

The recurring case

20–30% of collected revenue, month after month, works when:

  • Gross margin supports it
  • Annual expansion / seat growth is real
  • You want partners who educate, not spray

Fintech and B2B SaaS affiliates prefer recurring because their content compounds. A review post that ranks for three years should pay for three years.

A simple decision grid

Your reality Prefer
High churn, low ACV Bounty (or hybrid: bounty + 3-month residual)
Low churn, high ACV Recurring 20%+
Mixed funnel Hybrid: bounty on trial, residual on paid

Hybrid structures we see working

  1. $80 bounty + 15% residual after the first invoice
  2. 25% months 1–12, 10% thereafter (front-loads partner cash without permanent margin hit)
  3. Rev-share only above a usage threshold for infra / API products

Why AFFLIATE prints both

Our program rankings show commission as written — “30% recurring” or “$180 bounty” — beside EPC. That is deliberate. EPC without structure is a vanity number; structure without EPC is a press release.

Price the program the way you want partners to behave. Then put the terms in the ledger where publishers can actually read them.

Practice the partner motion on Stock Picks — check current partner availability and published terms before promoting an offer.
